Prof Leung Kin Kwong

Tanaka Chair Professor, Imperial College (BSc in Electronics, 1980)

Kin K. Leung received his B.S. degree in Electronics from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1980, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from University of California, Los Angeles, in 1982 and 1985, respectively. From 1986 to 2004, he worked at AT&T Bell Labs and its successor companies in New Jersey. Since 2004, he has been the Tanaka Chair Professor in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Computing Departments at Imperial College in London.

Professor Leung is internationally renowned in the field of communications networks. He has led fundamental research and development of many award-winning and high-impact communications network technologies. These have led to significant design improvements and new capabilities of large-scale communications and wireless networks in the U.S. and U.K.

He has received major awards and honors, including the membership of Academia Europaea, IEEE Fellow, IET Fellow, Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award, and the Distinguished Member of Technical Staff Award at AT&T Bell Labs. Jointly with his co-authors, he also won the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Leonard G. Abraham Prize, the Lanchester Prize Honorable Mention Award and a number of best paper awards.

His current research focuses on machine learning, optimization and cross-layer design for communications, computer and sensor infrastructures. He has received 50 granted U.S. patents and published over 325 papers, receiving 17,800 citations with an h-index of 66 in Google Scholar.

In terms of professional activities, he chaired the IEEE Fellow Evaluation Committee for ComSoc. He has served on the editorial boards of 10 IEEE and ACM journals. Currently, he chairs the Steering Committee for the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, and is an editor for the ACM Computing Survey and International Journal on Sensor Networks. He is an IEEE ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer.
