Wing-Kin Ma received the B.Eng. degree in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Portsmouth, Portsmouth, U.K., in 1995, and the M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees, both in electronic engineering from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Hong Kong, in 1997 and 2001, respectively. He is currently a Professor with the Department of Electronic Engineering, CUHK, Hong Kong.
His research interests include signal processing, optimization, communications, and by extension, relevant topics in data science and machine learning. In particular, his fundamental research on semidefinite relaxation and structured matrix factorization has received much interest in the communities of signal processing, communications, and geoscience and remote sensing. He is an IEEE Fellow, recognized for his contributions to optimization for signal processing and communications. He was the recipient of the Research Excellence Award 2013–2014 by CUHK, the 2015 IEEE Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper Award, the 2016 IEEE Signal Processing Letters Best Paper Award, and the 2018 IEEE SPS Best Paper Award. Dr. Ma is very active in the Signal Processing Society (SPS). He has rich editorial experience, serving various journals previously in different capacities. Currently he is the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, a flagship journal in the SPS. He previously served two technical committees of the IEEE SPS, served the technical committees of many conferences, was an IEEE SPS Distinguished Lecturer in 2018–2019, and was the SPS Regional Director-at-Large for Region 10 in 2020–2021.
